Dentist plays a key role in the provision of oral healthcare and is satisfying not only in terms of performing high-standard clinical procedures but also in terms of social interaction. The dentist also fulfils an important function in educating patients regarding their oral care.

Dentistry is a rapidly changing, expanding profession. Increasing population and its need for quality oral healthcare is a prime issue in developing countries. Emerging multidisciplinary approach and the importance of body mouth connections make dentist a key person in treatment planning and execution.

Introduction of the Department

The ‘Dental College ‘of University Medical and Dental College started in 2008 has now established as an institute to groom dental students for graduate and postgraduate degrees. This is the first private sector female dental institute that offers programs of dental education to produce competent dental professionals to serve the country. We have an excellent faculty to teach and train dental students on scientific grounds, a dedicated staff and latest state of the art equipment and educational facilities to enhance technical capability of students. DEPARTMENT OF PERIODONTOLOGY

 

It deals with the biology of periodontium in health and in disease. This branch of dentistry covers both the non-surgical, surgical as well as medicinal approach in managing the diseases of periodontal tissues & its associated structures.

DEPARTMENT OF PROSTHODONTICS

 

Prosthodontics is the Science & Art of replacing teeth and its associated structure by means of removable and fixed Prosthesis.

It covers clinical and laboratory techniques. This includes history taking and examination for partial dentures, complete dentures, impression making techniques, jaw relation recording, concepts of articulators and occlusion, mounting and insertion along with post insertion complaints.

The new treatment modality of dental implants, have been included to keep pace with modern dentistry.

DEPARTMENT OF ORTHODONTICS

 

Orthodontics deals with Malocclusion, which is a technical term for crooked, crowded or protruding teeth which do not fit together properly. Most malocclusions are inherited. These include crowding of teeth, too much space between teeth, extra or missing teeth, cleft palate and a variety of irregularities of the jaws and face. Some malocclusions are acquired. They can be caused by thumb-sucking, tongue thrusting, dental disease, premature loss of primary or permanent teeth, accidents or some medical problems.

Beautiful smile is just one of the benefits orthodontist has to offer. Bringing lips and jaws into proper alignment not only produces a great smile, but a healthy one as well. Straight teeth simply function better and are easier to clean. And last but far from least is the increased confidence and self-esteem that a healthy smile provides.

DEPARTMENT OF ORAL & MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY

 

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the specialty of dentistry which includes the diagnosis, surgical and adjunctive treatment of oral diseases, injuries and defects involving both the functional and esthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissue of the oral and maxillofacial regions. It includes anesthesia, diagnosis, patient assessment, dento-alveolar surgery, temporomandibular surgery, orthographic surgery, trauma, reconstructive surgery, oral pathology and Tumors of the Head & Neck area.

At a time other discipline of medicine, like neurosurgery, plastic surgery and ENT are incorporated for different patients working as a team to provide the best possible treatment.

DEPARTMENT OF OPERATIVE DENTISTRY

 

Operative Dentistry is the art and science of the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of defects of teeth which require restoration. Such restorations should restore the proper tooth form, function and esthetics while maintaining the physiological integrity of the teeth in harmonious relationship with the adjacent hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity.

During the last 50 years treatment of carious teeth has evolved constantly. The specialty of operative dentistry is concerned with the treatment of carious, discolored and broken down teeth.

Newer techniques and materials are being introduced on a regular basis. Operative dentistry is still recognized as the foundation of dentistry and the base from which most other aspects of dentistry are evolved. The contributions of many practitioners, educators and researchers throughout the world have resulted in operative dentistry being recognized today as a scientifically based discipline that plays an important role in enhancing dental health.

The dynamic specialty of operative dentistry is made up of several sub specialties. It includes:

DEPARTMENT OF ORAL MEDICINE

 

Oral medicine is also an important subject of dentistry, which deals with the diagnosis, investigations, management and treatment of the various non-surgical oral conditions. It also educates us to understand the oral manifestations of different systemic conditions which have a very important role in patient management.
