INTRODUCTION:

Medical laboratory is one of the busiest and most crucial departments of the Madinah Teaching Hospital. Approximately 70% of medical decisions, diagnosis, treatment and evaluations, are based on the interpretations of laboratory test results. MTH laboratory is situated near the Emergency department in front of Radiology department. This laboratory provides services round the clock even on the weekends and holidays. Medical Laboratory consists of various sections including Haematology, Clinical Chemistry, Blood Bank, Microbiology and Molecular Biology. All sections of Medical Laboratory are equipped with most modern state of the art fully automated analyzers, capable of handling not only current workload but even much more in future, producing high quality accurate results. Each and every test being performed at MTH Medical Laboratory is accompanied with appropriate quality control which is being monitored for precision and accuracy. MTH medical Laboratory is registered with Bio-Rad EQAS, US , external quality assurance scheme and for the last few years, have been declared amongst the best laboratories in the world. On an average around 120 CBC samples are processed in a day along with a number of other routine and special Haematology tests. In the Chemistry laboratory, around 350 samples are processed for ClinicalChemistry. In Blood Bank, about 5000 transfusions are arranged per year.

SPECIAL SERVICES:

MTH Laboratory offers wide range of routine and special laboratory tests. In particular, tests for infectious diseases like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV and Syphilis are available. There are number of specialized Clinical Chemistry tests available, like Thyroid Function Tests (TSH, T3, T4), Various Type of Hormones ( FSH, LH, Prolactin, Beta HCG), Tests for detection of Anaemia (Ferritin, Iron, TIBC), Tumor markers (CA 125, PSA, Alphafetoprotein). All these tests are performed on most modern state of the art analyzers using ECLIA technology. These equipment are not available in any other hospital in Faisalabad.

We are also offering all type of culture sensitivity to detect infections and provide information on drugs which are sensitive to those organisms. This includes Blood cultures, both aerobic and anaerobic. Cultures for TB (tuberculosis) are also processed.

Molecular Biology section of Medical laboratory offers real time PCR for Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C utilizing most modern equipment. Blood transfusion services are provided for our patients in the Blood Bank where we utilize most modern and sensitive techniques, using Gel cards for cross matching to ensure any incompatibility due to antibodies is detect for safe transfusion practices. Various blood products like Whole Blood, Packed RBCs, FFP (Fresh Frozen Plasma) and Platelet concentrates are available. Blood donation is only accepted from healthy individuals after their physical/medical exam is done and satisfactory and the screening tests (Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, Syphilis and Malarial Parasites) are negative. There is always adequate stock of blood and blood products for our patients use routinely and to cover during emergency/life threatening situations.
