Department of Gastroenterology, Madinah Teaching Hospital marked the World Hepatitis Day on Saturday 28 July, 2018. Addressing the audience Dr Shahid Rasool, HoD Gastroenterology, MTH stated that every 10th person in our country is suffering from one type of hepatitis or the other and the viral infection varies in severity from a self-limited condition with total recovery to a life-threatening or lifelong disease. According to medical experts, over 20 million people in Pakistan are infected with hepatitis B and C virus including around 15 million with C and five million with B and the disease is swelling at an alarming rate.
The theme for this year announced by WHO was “find the missing millions”, which calls to weed out Hepatitis globally by 2030. A large turnout of public was witnessed at MTH, to avail the free treatment and screening facilities for Hepatitis which was arranged to mark the World Hepatitis Day. The day-long activities were chalked out by MTH to facilitate the public to obtain information about preventive and curative steps of Hepatitis.
On the occasion Prof Dr Akmal Sharif, and Dr Bashir Ahmad, spoke on prevention and control of Hepatitis in Pakistan. An awareness walk on ‘World Hepatitis Day’ was also organized by Department of Gastroenterology in Madinah Teaching Hospital.
All facilities which were extended were free.
