MTH Department of Nephrology

Description

Introduction

The Department of Nephrology was established in January 2016 and plays a vital role in tertiary care because of the rising number of kidney patients and their need for specialized treatment.

Since its start, the department has been dedicated to providing quality care for many kidney conditions, including acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, glomerular diseases, urinary tract infections, fluid and electrolyte imbalances, acid-base disorders, polycystic kidney disease, dialysis complications, and kidney transplant issues.

We provide these services as follows:

  • Outpatient Department (OPD): OPD clinics are held twice a week for outdoor patients.
  • Emergency Services: Daily emergency care is available for critical kidney patients, with admissions in the high dependency unit when required.
  • Emergency Dialysis: Urgent dialysis is provided in the dialysis unit or ICU when needed.
  • Indoor Patient Care: Consultants conduct daily rounds, plan treatments, and manage complicated cases with interdepartmental discussions.
  • Consultation for Other Departments: Nephrology support is available for patients of other specialties who may develop kidney issues.
  • Regular Dialysis: Stable end-stage kidney patients receive routine dialysis sessions in the dialysis unit.

Academic Role

Along with patient care, the department also focuses on training medical students and staff. We provide:

  • Lectures on nephrology, fluid and electrolyte balance, and acid-base disorders.
  • Clinical classes for undergraduate students.
  • Lectures and training for dialysis technician diploma students.

Special Services

Hemodialysis:

The dialysis unit operates 24/7 with 18 dialysis machines and 1 separate ICU machine. More than 1,000 dialysis sessions are performed monthly. Poor patients are given discounts. Pure water for dialysis is ensured through a dedicated treatment plant. Dialysis is also available for ICU patients on ventilators with portable water treatment and a dedicated machine.

Dialysis Catheter Procedure:

Emergency patients without a working AV fistula or graft are provided dialysis catheters. Hundreds of procedures have been successfully performed with very few complications.

Kidney Biopsy:

Real-time ultrasound-guided kidney biopsies are carried out with a high success rate and minimal complications. Cases are discussed with histopathologists when needed for proper diagnosis.
